Understanding how we work, before we begin.
People often come to YAK with similar questions about how the work happens, what to expect and how we support different kinds of businesses. This page brings everything together in one place so you can get a clear sense of how we work before we begin.
If you cannot find the answer you are looking for, you can use our Contact Us page to reach out.
Why might working with YAK help right now?
-
People usually reach out because they want to grow their business, but something is getting in the way. Sometimes growth has slowed or even stopped. Other times the business is growing faster than the current foundations can support, and it is getting harder to manage day to day.
Some founders and leaders get in touch when things have become quite difficult. Others come to us earlier, when they can sense that the way the business has been operating is no longer working as well as it used to. In both situations the feeling underneath is often the same. The foundations are starting to show some strain, and you want to address it before the pressure builds and limits what you can do.
-
It often shows up as a sense that things are not quite right, even if everything looks okay from the outside. Decisions that used to move along quite smoothly now seem to drag on. Priorities keep shifting or competing with each other. You are still putting in the effort, but the progress you are seeing just does not feel as steady or natural as you would like. Sometimes the culture starts to feel a bit off, or the way things are working day to day is simply not keeping up. There can be a low level of constant pressure that builds over time.
Sometimes it appears as frustration when the same issues keep coming back, or when growth feels forced rather than natural. You know the business has real potential, but the current way of working is starting to hold it back.
-
We are for businesses at any stage. You do not need to wait until things feel like they are in real trouble.
Many people reach out when the business is still doing okay on the surface, but they can sense that the current way of working is starting to creak. Growth might be happening, yet it feels harder than it should. Decisions drag on. Small issues keep resurfacing. They want to sort the foundations now, while things are relatively stable, so the business can keep moving forward without unnecessary strain later.
Others come when the pressure has built up and things feel more difficult. They might be dealing with repeated problems, team struggles, or growth that has outpaced the structure. In these cases, we work to stabilise things and rebuild the foundations so the business can recover and grow properly again.
The common thread is that it is never too early or too late. Whether your business is stable, growing fast, slowing down, or facing real challenges, clearer and stronger foundations make a real difference.
-
Our approach is quite straightforward and practical. We focus on building strong foundations first, rather than jumping straight into strategy sessions or motivational advice.
We take time to understand what is really happening in your business, including the things that might not be said out loud. Then we work alongside you to create clarity, sort out the structure, and put simple systems in place that actually fit the way you and your teamwork.
A lot of consultants bring big frameworks or theoretical models that are a one size fits all approach. We prefer to keep things grounded and bespoke to you and your business. We listen carefully, ask direct questions, and help you make changes that feel manageable and sustainable. The goal is not to add more complexity. It is to make running the business feel lighter and more straightforward, so you can grow with confidence instead of constant pressure.
Who do we usually work with?
-
We work with businesses at all stages. Some are sole traders or early‑stage founders who want to build strong foundations before things get too busy. Others are growing SMEs that have expanded quickly and now need clearer structure, better ways of working or support with culture as the team grows. We also work with larger and more established organisations that want help improving how the business runs day to day, strengthening culture or navigating more complex change.
The size of the business is not the deciding factor. What matters is whether you want more clarity, stronger foundations and a way of working that supports the next stage of growth. That includes governance, risk and compliance work. Although GRC is often associated with larger organisations, smaller businesses also benefit from having the right structures in place early on. We tailor the support to fit where you are now and where you want to go.
-
Yes. We work with a lot of sole traders and early‑stage founders, and we are genuinely passionate about supporting people at this stage. It is a point in the journey where you are often carrying everything yourself. You are the strategist, the doer, the planner, the problem‑solver and the person keeping the whole thing moving. We understand what that feels like, and we know how heavy it can become when you are trying to grow without the right foundations underneath you.
Some people come to us because they want clarity around what to focus on next. Others reach out because the business is starting to grow and they want to build structure before things get too busy or complicated. Sometimes it is about making sense of all the moving parts. Sometimes it is about getting clearer on direction. And sometimes it is simply about having someone who can help you step back, see the bigger picture and put shape around what you are trying to build.
-
Yes. We work with a lot of small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs) and growing businesses, especially those that have expanded faster than their internal structure is capable of supporting. It often starts with a sense that things are getting harder to hold together. Decisions take longer. Small issues keep resurfacing. The culture might feel a bit stretched, or the way people work together is not as smooth as it used to be.
Growth is a good thing, but it can put real pressure on the foundations. What worked when the team was smaller does not always work when the business reaches a new stage. We help stabilise things, strengthen the structure and create clearer ways of working so the business can keep growing without the constant strain.
Some organisations come to us because they want to get ahead of these issues before they become bigger problems. Others reach out when things already feel a bit messy or overwhelming. Either way, we work alongside you to bring clarity, improve how the business runs day to day and support the team through the changes that come with growth.
-
Yes. We work with larger and more established organisations, especially when they want to improve how the business runs day to day, strengthen culture or bring more clarity to leadership and decision making. Sometimes the structure has become complicated over time and they want support to simplify things and make the organisation easier to run. Other times they are going through a period of change and need steady, people centred support to navigate it well.
We also support larger organisations with governance, risk and compliance (GRC) work. This can include strengthening internal processes and documentation, preparing for supplier assessments, addressing technology risk or helping teams understand their responsibilities more clearly. Our experience spans strategy, leadership, technology, risk management, governance and compliance across highly regulated sectors, so we understand what larger organisations need in order to operate with confidence.
Even though GRC is often associated with big companies, the work itself is practical and grounded. We focus on what will genuinely help your organisation run more smoothly, meet expectations and present itself as a credible, reliable partner. We work alongside internal teams to bring clarity, strengthen foundations and make the organisation easier to manage at scale.
-
We are based in Scotland, and we work with clients across the UK and internationally. Our work has supported organisations in Europe, Asia and Australasia, and most projects blend remote and in‑person support depending on what the organisation needs. Geography is rarely a barrier. What matters is whether you want to bring more clarity into the business and strengthen the foundations that support your growth.
Some clients prefer regular online sessions. Others bring us in for specific pieces of work or key moments of change. We shape the approach around what works best for you, your team and the way your organisation operates.
What if I’m not sure what the real issue is?
-
It’s very common to feel that something isn’t quite right but not be able to put your finger on it. Most people don’t come to us with a perfectly defined problem. They come with a feeling. Things aren’t running as smoothly as they should. Decisions take longer. The team feels a little out of sync. Growth has slowed, or you’re not meeting the targets you expected. In some cases, you’re not even sure what the targets should be anymore.
You don’t need to arrive with a clear diagnosis. Part of our work is helping you understand what’s really going on underneath the surface. We take time to listen, ask questions and look at how things are working day to day. Often the real issue is a mix of operations, people and direction, and it only becomes clear once we step back and look at the whole picture together.
Our role is to help you make sense of it, bring clarity to what’s actually happening and shape a way forward that feels manageable and grounded.
-
Yes. In most organisations, the real challenges sit across more than one area. Operations, people and strategy are deeply connected, so when something isn’t working, it rarely belongs to just one part of the business. You might see the symptoms in one place, but the root cause is often somewhere else.
Our work is designed for exactly this. We look at how the business runs day to day, how people work together and how the direction of the organisation supports (or strains) the rest of the system. By stepping back and looking at the whole picture, we can help you understand what’s really going on and where to focus first.
You don’t need to separate everything out before you come to us. We help you make sense of the mix, bring clarity to what’s happening underneath and shape a way forward that feels achievable.
How does working with us actually work?
-
We start with a simple conversation. No pressure, no preparation needed. It’s a chance for you to talk through what’s happening in the business and what you feel you need support with. You don’t have to arrive with a clear brief; most people don’t.
From there, we explore what kind of support would make the biggest difference. Sometimes that’s a focused piece of work. Sometimes it’s a longer engagement. Sometimes it’s a single session to help you get unstuck. The starting point is always the same: understanding what’s going on and what you need right now.
-
The free Intro Call is simply a chance to talk. You share what’s happening in the business, what feels unclear or stuck, and what you’d like to be different. There’s no pressure to present anything or have everything figured out. It’s a relaxed, practical conversation where we listen, ask questions and start to understand what you need.
By the end of that call, you’ll have a clearer sense of whether we’re the right fit and what the next step could look like. It’s about clarity, not commitment.
-
Yes. The support can be as focused or as ongoing as you need. Some people come to us for a single session to work through a specific challenge or decision. That might be a one‑hour clarity session to help you get unstuck, or a three‑hour focus session when you need deeper thinking time and a clear way forward.
Others need a longer engagement because the work sits across operations, people and strategy, and it takes time to understand the full picture and make meaningful changes.
We shape the approach around what will genuinely help, not around a fixed package. The important thing is that it fits your business and gives you the clarity and support you need.
-
It depends on what you need. Some pieces of work are focused and can be completed within a few weeks. Others take longer because the challenges sit across operations, people and strategy, and it takes time to understand the full picture and make meaningful changes.
If you’re looking for something short and concentrated, you can start with a one‑hour clarity session or a three‑hour focus session. These are designed to help you get unstuck quickly and move forward with confidence.
For broader work, we’ll talk through what you’re trying to achieve, what’s realistic for your business and what kind of pace feels manageable.
-
Both. Most of the work can be done remotely, which gives you flexibility and keeps things moving without disrupting your day to day. When it’s helpful to be in the room for workshops, deeper sessions or time with your team, we can work onsite too.
We choose the format that supports the work best and fits the way your business runs.
Do you help with governance, risk and compliance (GRC)?
-
GRC support with YAK is shaped around how your business actually works. We start by getting a clear picture of your day to day reality: how decisions are made, where responsibilities sit, what feels unclear, and where the pressure points are. From there, we help you strengthen the structures that keep the business steady.
Our GRC work is informed by more than twenty years of experience in technology risk and governance, gained through working directly with global financial services organisations. That depth of experience means we understand what good looks like in regulated environments, and how to translate those standards into practical steps for businesses of any size.
Support can include reviewing policies and processes, clarifying roles, improving decision pathways, or helping you meet specific regulatory expectations. It may also involve identifying risks that have gone unnoticed, simplifying areas that have become overly complicated, or putting in place practical steps that make the business safer and easier to run.
We keep the work grounded, collaborative and designed to fit your organisation rather than forcing you into a framework. The aim is to give you clarity, confidence and a stronger foundation for growth.
-
No. Every organisation carries risk, makes decisions and has responsibilities, regardless of size or sector. Smaller businesses often benefit the most because a few well‑placed improvements can make a noticeable difference to how things run. GRC is not about adding layers of complexity. It is about creating clarity, reducing avoidable pressure and helping the business operate in a steady, confident way.
Whether you are an established organisation looking for support with your existing GRC regime, or a smaller business needing guidance on where to start, the approach is shaped around your context. That might mean strengthening what you already have or helping you understand what good looks like in regulated or fast‑moving environments. The aim is always to give you the right level of structure without overwhelming the business.
-
GRC sits alongside the operational, people and strategy work that forms the core of your foundations. When you strengthen one area, the others become clearer too. Good governance supports better decision making. Clear processes reduce risk. Stronger structures make it easier for your team to do their best work. It all connects.
This is why GRC is not treated as a separate technical exercise. It is part of building a business that runs smoothly, makes confident decisions and has the right level of structure in place for where you are and where you want to go.
Practical questions
-
We keep pricing straightforward. Once we understand what you need, we agree the scope together and give you a clear, transparent cost. Some of our sessions have a fixed price, and others depend on the depth and complexity of the work. There are no hidden extras and no surprises later. The focus is on giving you the right level of support for where you are, rather than fitting you into a predefined package.
If you want an overview of the types of support we offer and the associate cost, you can find more detail on our services page.
-
A lot of our work is project based, shaped around a clear piece of support with a defined outcome. For some clients, a retainer makes more sense, especially when they want steady guidance, regular check ins or ongoing access to support as their business evolves. We agree on this together based on what will genuinely serve you, rather than defaulting to one model.
-
Confidentiality is a core part of how we work. Every client has a Service Agreement in place, and this sets out how we handle and protect the information you share with us. Anything you provide, whether business, financial, operational or strategic, is treated with care and kept within the work we are doing together.
We only use your information for delivering the agreed support, and we handle all documents, conversations and context with the same level of discretion we expect in our own business.
-
If something comes up and you need support quickly, we will always do our best to help. The first step is to get in touch and let us know what is happening. We will look at our schedule and see what is possible, whether that is a short notice session, a focused piece of work or a quick call to steady things. If we cannot offer immediate support, we will be clear about that so you can plan your next steps with confidence.
